How much does a home sauna cost?
Updated October 27, 2026
The short answer
Most home saunas cost $3,000 to $6,000 installed, and the national average for a four-person sauna is about $4,500.1,2A small one-person sauna can come in around $2,000. A custom build or a sauna for eight to ten people runs $7,000 to $10,000 or more.1
Cost by size
Size drives cost more than anything else: more wood, a bigger heater and more labor.
| Size | Typical cost, installed |
|---|---|
| 1 person | $2,000–$3,500 |
| 2–4 people | $3,000–$6,000 |
| 5–7 people | $6,000–$9,000 |
| 8–10 people | $9,000–$10,000 |

Cost by type
| Type | 2–4 person, installed | How it heats |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional electric | $3,000–$5,000 | Electric heater warms a bed of rocks; you can pour water on them for steam (löyly). |
| Wood-burning | $3,000–$4,000 | Wood stove heats the rocks. No 240-volt circuit, but you need a chimney and firewood. |
| Infrared | $2,000–$12,000 | Infrared panels warm your body directly at a lower air temperature. |
| Steam | $4,000–$6,000 | A steam generator fills a sealed, waterproof room. |

Kit or custom?
- Prefab kit, you assemble it: about $2,640–$4,790 for four people.1 Kits arrive as panels or pre-cut boards with the heater, benches and door.
- Prefab kit, installed by a pro: about $4,000–$6,000.1
- Custom build: around $7,000–$8,000 for a two- to four-person cedar sauna with an electric heater, benches, lighting and the electrical work, and $10,000 with upgrades.1 Custom makes sense for an odd-shaped space, a basement or bathroom conversion, or a specific wood or layout.
Indoor vs. outdoor
Fixr puts indoor saunas at $3,000–$9,000 and outdoor saunas at $3,000–$6,000.1 Indoor jobs can run higher when a room needs framing, insulation, a vapor barrier or ventilation added. Outdoor saunas need a level foundation and power run out to them, and some need a building permit. Ourbackyard sauna guide covers the outdoor side in detail.

What it costs to run
An electric heater's running cost is its power (kW) × hours on × your electricity rate. At the U.S. residential average of 18.16¢ per kWh (August 2026)3, a session with about 45 minutes of heat-up and 45 minutes of use costs at most:
| Heater | Cost per 1.5-hour session, full power |
|---|---|
| 4.5 kW | $1.23 |
| 6 kW | $1.63 |
| 8 kW | $2.18 |
Real costs are lower, because a heater cycles on and off once the room reaches temperature. Fixr estimates $25–$30 a month for an electric sauna, $15–$20 for infrared and $20–$40 for wood-burning, including wood.1 Check your own rate on your utility bill.
Home sauna vs. day passes
We track confirmed prices for public saunas. Across the 76 businesses where we've confirmed a single-visit price, the median is $40 (range $15–$100). At that rate:
- A $3,000 sauna equals about 75 visits.
- A $4,500 sauna, the national average, equals about 113 visits.
- A $7,500 custom build equals about 188 visits.
At two sessions a week, the average sauna equals about 1.1 years of day passes, before running costs. Public saunas still win on things a home sauna can't match, like cold plunges, a social scene and no upkeep. Find one near you.
Getting quotes
Ask each builder to quote the same things, so you can compare like for like:
- Size (inside dimensions and seats) and wood species.
- Heater type and kW, and who supplies it.
- Whether the electrical work, permit and any foundation or framing are included.
- Warranty on the heater and on the build.
